The Feelings Rulebook You Didn't Know You Were Following

Here's a question worth sitting with: who taught you how to feel?

Not the biology of it — the rules. The unspoken ones about which feelings are okay to show and which ones you learned to hide. Most of us never chose these rules. We just absorbed them, somewhere along the way, and started living by them without ever noticing.

Naming these lessons is the first step toward a fuller, more honest emotional life. So grab a piece of paper and actually write these down.

Ask yourself:

  • What are the "rules" you were taught about feelings, growing up?
  • Are some feelings more acceptable than others? Which ones — and why do you think that is?
  • Do you actually agree with these rules, or is it just something you were handed
  • What would change in your life if you stopped living by them?

There's no right answer here. Just an honest look at a script you may not have known you were following.

AN AUDIT OF THE RULES YOU WERE TAUGHT

You might be tempted to just read this and move on without writing anything down or sharing it — no pressure if that's where you're at today. But if you have even 10 minutes and a little bit of capacity, consider jotting down your answers below in the comments. It doesn't need to be organized or polished. A few scattered thoughts count. The value isn't in getting it "right" — it's in seeing your own patterns reflected back, and realizing other people are working through the exact same rules you are. That's often where the shift starts.
